Start with a role hierarchy, not a name list
Discord's hierarchy is operational: members can only affect people and roles below their highest role. Place roles by authority and responsibility first; colour and style come afterwards.
The owner account; final authority and recovery.
A rare, trusted server manager with selected management permissions.
Member safety, reports and message moderation.
Answers questions; no automatic moderation power.
Below human staff, above only roles they must assign.
Normal access; no management permissions.
Optional identity or channel access.
Permission-free, usually self-assignable.
The safest useful starting access.
Need the complete server sequence? Build roles after the channel plan in the complete Discord server setup guide.
Build your role stack
Choose a server type, rename roles and move them into the order you need. The copied plan is a starting structure; the Discord Roles Generator creates the detailed permissions, bot placement, member gates and optional roles.
Separate moderation from event hosting; use game, platform and ping roles to help players find the right people without granting power.
Permission guidance by responsibility
Role sets by server type
These are working systems, not mandatory titles. Each row explains why the role exists, where it belongs, whether it needs power and how it should be assigned.
Gaming community roles
Separate moderation from event hosting; use game, platform and ping roles to help players find the right people without granting power.

Temporary roles should be removed after the event.Common role mistakes
- Creating too many roles
Every role adds a decision and another permission surface. Start with jobs, access and genuinely useful choices.
- Giving excessive permissions
Build from no permissions upward. Administrator should not compensate for uncertain configuration.
- Putting roles in the wrong order
Staff or bots cannot manage roles above them; bots above staff may be able to act against the people running the server.
- Giving cosmetic roles power
A colour or ping role should not also grant moderation, invites or mass mentions.
- Blurring staff and member status
VIP, veteran, donor and expert labels must not look like moderation authority.
- Keeping unused roles
Remove abandoned event, game and automation roles after checking channel overrides and integrations that depend on them.
Discord roles FAQ
What is the best Discord role order?
Put the owner and any narrowly trusted server managers at the top, then moderators and helpers, human staff above bots, bots above only the roles they must assign, followed by members, access roles and permission-free self-assignable roles. The exact names matter less than clear authority and safe permissions.
Should moderators have the Administrator permission?
Usually no. Administrator bypasses channel restrictions and grants every permission. Give moderators only the actions their job requires, such as managing messages and using timeouts, then add kick or ban authority only when your process needs it.
Where should bot roles go?
Keep bots below human staff. A bot that assigns roles must sit above the roles it manages, but it does not need to sit above moderators or unrelated access roles. Give each bot only the permissions its documented features need.
Should cosmetic and notification roles have permissions?
No. Colour, interest, pronoun, platform, region, achievement and notification roles should normally be permission-free. If a role unlocks a channel, grant access through that channel or category override rather than adding broad server permissions.
