  • Beginner
  • ~35 min setup
  • 17 channels · 6 roles
  • Needs Community features

Is this template right for you?

Help students and self-learners study consistently together. Members set weekly goals in public, join silent or Pomodoro focus rooms, get help that respects academic integrity, and find study partners in their time zone.

Best for

  • Accountability through regular goal-setting and check-ins
  • Body-doubling and co-working in voice
  • Peer help across several subjects

Not ideal for

  • Official course servers run by a school, which have their own policies and staff requirements
  • General-interest clubs without a study focus — Community Basecamp is broader

Built for: High school and university students · Exam and certification cohorts · Self-taught learners and bootcamp students · Language learners and reading groups

Onboarding flow

Server Onboarding asks members to accept the integrity policy, choose their subjects and time zone, and opt in to session pings.

Question 1 · required

What are you studying?

  • Maths→ Member + Maths role
  • Sciences→ Member + Sciences role
  • Languages→ Member + Languages role
  • Humanities→ Member + Humanities role
  • Computing→ Member + Computing role
Question 2 · optional

Which time zone are you in?

  • Americas→ Americas role
  • Europe & Africa→ Europe & Africa role
  • Asia & Oceania→ Asia & Oceania role
Question 3 · optional

Want a ping when group focus sessions start?

  • Yes→ Focus Session Ping
  • No→ Nothing

Default channels: rules-and-integrity, how-it-works, announcements, weekly-goals, daily-log, study-buddies, ask-for-help, study-techniques, break-room, wins, Silent Study

Discord requires at least 7 default channels for Community Onboarding, and @everyone must be able to view and send messages in at least 5 of them.

Suggested first steps: Read the integrity policy → Post this week's goals in #weekly-goals → Join Silent Study for one session → Find a partner in #study-buddies

Moderation setup

Verification level
Medium — Students often join from public links shared in class chats or forums; Medium filters brand-new throwaway accounts.
Explicit media filter
Scan media content from all members.

AutoMod rules

  • Custom keywords for contract-cheating adverts, such as "do your assignment", "essay writing service" and "exam answers"Block and alert #mod-log. These are the most common spam in study servers.
  • Block suspected spam contentBlock and alert.
  • Block mention spam (limit around 5)Block and time out for 10 minutes.
  • Commonly flagged words: the Insults and Slurs and Sexual Content listsBlock and alert.

Escalation

  1. Reminder with a link to the integrity policy
  2. Message removed
  3. Timeout
  4. Kick
  5. Ban for selling or requesting cheating services, leaked exams, harassment or predatory behaviour
  • Many members may be under 18. Keep all channels safe for work and prohibit adults from soliciting private DMs with minors.
  • Helpers explain methods; they do not complete graded work. Remove posts asking for answers to live exams or tests.
  • Discord's minimum age is 13, or higher where local law requires it. Do not collect members' exact ages or schools.

Recommended bots

Try Discord's built-in features first. Bot names are examples to evaluate, not endorsements; CordNexa has no affiliation with any bot. Review the permissions a bot requests before adding it.

Pomodoro or study timer

Optional

Keeps shared focus sessions in sync.

Native first: A Study Mentor can post start and break times manually, or members use their own timer while sitting in Silent Study.

Study statistics and leaderboards

Optional

Some groups find voice-time tracking motivating.

Native first: Weekly goal threads provide accountability without tracking. If you add stats, make them opt-in and avoid public rankings that pressure members.

Reminders

Optional

Nudges for the Monday goal post and Friday check-in.

Native first: A repeating Scheduled Event (members who mark it Interested are notified when it starts) or a Club Lead calendar reminder works without a bot.

Step-by-step setup

These steps are specific to this kit. For the reasoning behind each stage — permissions, onboarding, testing and launch — see how to make a Discord server.

  1. Create the server and enable Community

Create the server and enable Community features (Discord requires a verified-email verification level, the explicit media filter set to scan all members, a rules channel and a community updates channel). Set #rules-and-integrity as the rules channel.

  2. Write the integrity policy first

Before inviting anyone, write what help is allowed: explaining concepts, reviewing your own attempt and sharing open resources. Also state what is not: doing graded work, sharing live exam content or leaked papers.

  3. Create roles in order

Club Lead → Study Mentor → Member → subject, time-zone and ping roles.

  4. Build categories and channels

Create each category with its permissions, then its channels. Deny Speak for Member in Silent Study and Pomodoro 25/5.

  5. Set up the forums

Add subject tags to #ask-for-help and #resources, require tags, and restrict #weekly-goals post creation to Club Lead and Study Mentor.

  6. Configure Onboarding

Add the subject, time-zone and ping questions, and choose the default channels listed in this kit.

  7. Configure AutoMod

Set verification to Medium and add the contract-cheating keyword rule before sharing any public invite.

  8. Open the first week

Create the first #weekly-goals post, schedule a group focus session as a Discord Event, and test the server with View Server As Role → Member.

Make it yours

Single-subject or single-exam groups

Replace subject roles and tags with topics or modules, for example Paper 1, Paper 2 and Coursework.

Language learning

Add channels per target language and a voice room for speaking practice where Speak is allowed.

Exam season

Add a temporary EXAM SEASON category with a countdown post and extra focus rooms, then archive it afterwards.

Cohort-based courses

Add a role per cohort and a role-gated channel for each, so each intake has its own space without duplicating the server.

Community rules

  1. Be supportive. No mocking questions, grades or learning speed.
  2. Academic integrity: we explain and guide, but do not complete graded work. No sharing or requesting live exam content, leaked papers or cheating services.
  3. Only share resources you created or that are openly licensed or free to share. No pirated textbooks.
  4. Keep focus rooms focused: mics off in silent rooms, and chat in #break-room.
  5. Keep everything safe for work. Adults must not solicit private DMs with members who may be minors.
  6. Ask good questions: include the topic, what you've tried and where you're stuck.
  7. Report problems to a Club Lead or Study Mentor.

Need stricter or more relaxed wording? Customise these rules in the rules generator.

Welcome message

The Study Club FAQ

What is an accountability server?

It is a server where members publicly set goals and report progress, and often study together in voice. The Study Club uses a weekly goal post with a Friday check-in, which is simple enough to keep running.

How do silent study rooms work on Discord?

Create a voice channel and deny the Speak permission for members. People join with cameras optional and microphones off, which gives the feeling of studying alongside others without distraction.

How do I prevent cheating requests in a study server?

Publish a clear integrity policy, make it part of onboarding, add AutoMod keyword rules for contract-cheating adverts, and remove requests for answers to live assessments.

Is The Study Club suitable for under-18 students?

It can be, with care. Keep all content safe for work, prohibit adults from soliciting DMs with minors, avoid collecting ages or school names, and follow Discord's minimum age requirements.
