GAMING DISCORD TEMPLATE / FREE SETUP KIT

The Gaming Hub

A multi-game community server with structured LFG, game and platform roles, squad voice rooms and scheduled game nights.

  • 50–1,000 members
  • Intermediate
  • ~45 min setup
  • 20 channels · 8 roles
  • Needs Community features

Is this template right for you?

Run one server for several games without every channel turning into a single noisy feed. Members pick the games and platforms they play during onboarding, find groups through a tagged LFG forum, and join capped squad voice rooms.

Best for

  • Communities that play three or more games and want per-game spaces
  • Groups that regularly need to find teammates across platforms and regions
  • Servers that run recurring game nights, scrims or small tournaments

Not ideal for

  • A small friend group playing one or two games — Pixel Party is lighter
  • Esports teams that need private strategy and roster management

Built for: Multi-game communities · Gaming clans and guilds · Content-adjacent gaming groups · Friend groups that have outgrown a single chat

Categories & channels

Create each category with its permissions first, then add channels inside it and keep them synced to the category. Channel types used: Text, Announcement, Forum, Voice, Stage.

Permissions: Visible to the matching game role.

Role-gated

Onboarding flow

Enable Community features, then use Server Onboarding so members choose games, platforms and pings before seeing the channel list.

Question 1 · required

Which games do you play here?

  • Game One→ Member + Game One role (unlocks #game-one-chat)
  • Game Two→ Member + Game Two role (unlocks #game-two-chat)
  • Just here to hang out→ Member only
Question 2 · optional

Which platforms do you play on?

  • PC→ PC role
  • PlayStation→ PlayStation role
  • Xbox→ Xbox role
  • Switch→ Switch role
  • Mobile→ Mobile role
Question 3 · optional

Do you want game night notifications?

  • Yes, ping me→ Game Night Ping role
  • No thanks→ Nothing

Default channels: rules, announcements, server-guide, general, off-topic, clips-and-highlights, lfg, suggest-a-game, Hangout

Discord requires at least 7 default channels for Community Onboarding, and @everyone must be able to view and send messages in at least 5 of them.

Suggested first steps: Read #server-guide → Post an LFG thread for your next session → Say hello in #general → RSVP to the next game night event

Moderation setup

Verification level
Medium — Requires a verified email and an account older than five minutes, which filters most throwaway raid accounts without blocking genuine new players.
Explicit media filter
Scan media content from all members.

AutoMod rules

  • Block mention spam (limit around 5 unique mentions per message)Block the message and time out for 10 minutes; alert #mod-log.
  • Block suspected spam contentBlock the message and alert #mod-log.
  • Commonly flagged words: the Insults and Slurs and Sexual Content listsBlock the message and alert #mod-log.
  • Custom keyword rule for account-selling, boosting and cheat-service phrases in your gamesBlock and alert. Review the keyword list monthly.
  • Block words in member profile names using the same slur listBlock and alert.

Escalation

  1. Friendly reminder in channel
  2. Message deleted with a DM explaining which rule applies
  3. Timeout of 1 to 24 hours logged in #mod-log
  4. Kick for repeat issues
  5. Ban for harassment, hate, scams, cheating services or doxxing — no prior warning needed
  • Use Timeout instead of a custom Muted role; it works everywhere automatically.
  • Add slowmode to #general and other busy channels during raids. If the raid continues, pause invites (Server Settings → Invites → Pause Invites, or Security Actions in the server menu, which can also pause DMs for a set time).
  • Keep competitive disputes out of public channels; ask players to open a DM with a moderator.

Recommended bots

Try Discord's built-in features first. Bot names are examples to evaluate, not endorsements; CordNexa has no affiliation with any bot. Review the permissions a bot requests before adding it.

Event scheduling and RSVPs

Optional

Game nights need a time, a reminder and a headcount.

Native first: Discord Scheduled Events let members mark themselves Interested and notify them when the event starts. Add a bot for sign-up lists, team balancing or calendar sync.

Examples: Apollo (sign-up lists), Sesh (recurring events and calendar sync are Sesh Premium)

Moderation logging

Optional

Message edit/delete logs help resolve disputes in competitive communities.

Native first: The Audit Log covers staff actions and AutoMod alerts cover blocked messages. A logging bot adds edited and deleted message history.

Examples: Carl-bot

Game stats or LFG commands

Optional

Some communities like slash commands that post rank or stats.

Native first: The tagged #lfg forum works without a bot. Only add a stats bot for games whose data it officially supports.

Step-by-step setup

These steps are specific to this kit. For the reasoning behind each stage — permissions, onboarding, testing and launch — see how to make a Discord server.

  1. Create the server and secure the owner account

Create a server from scratch and turn on multi-factor authentication (2FA) for the owner account. Consider Discord's 2FA requirement for moderation, so staff must use 2FA to kick, ban, time out or manage the server.

  2. Enable Community features

Server Settings → Enable Community. Choose #rules as the rules channel and #staff-chat as the community updates channel. Discord also requires a verification level that needs a verified email and the explicit media filter set to scan all members. Community unlocks Forum, Announcement and Stage channels and Server Onboarding.

  3. Create roles top-down

Create Admin, Moderator, Event Host, Veteran, Member, then game, platform and ping roles, and drag them into that order. A role can only manage roles below it.

  4. Lock down @everyone

Remove Mention @everyone, @here, and All Roles from @everyone, and Create Invite if you want staff to control invites. Keep View Channels and Send Messages for @everyone in the public default channels: Community Onboarding needs at least 5 default channels where @everyone can view and send messages.

  5. Build categories, then channels

Create each category with its permission overrides first, then create channels inside it and keep them synced to the category. Set user limits on Squad rooms and set AFK as the AFK channel.

  6. Configure forum tags

Add the listed tags to #lfg and #clips-and-highlights and require a tag on new posts. Set #lfg's Hide After Inactivity to 24 hours.

  7. Set up Onboarding

Add the three onboarding questions, map each answer to its role, and choose the default channels.

  8. Configure AutoMod and verification

Set verification to Medium, enable the AutoMod rules listed, and send alerts to #mod-log.

  9. Test as each role

Use Server Settings → Roles → View Server As Role for Member and one game role. Confirm staff channels are hidden and game channels appear only for their role.

  10. Post the guide and schedule the first event

Pin the server guide, publish the rules, create the first game night event and invite a few regular players before sharing the invite widely.

Make it yours

Add games only when they have players

An empty game channel makes the server look inactive. Use #suggest-a-game to create one after a few members commit to it.

Use competitive categories for ranked teams

If you run scrims, add a role-gated TEAMS category with one text and one voice channel per roster.

Rename the voice rooms for your games

Squad rooms can take game names, for example "Valorant 5-stack", once you know which games dominate.

Add a regional split only when needed

If time zones cause friction, add region roles and region-tagged LFG posts before creating separate regional channels.

Community rules

  1. Respect every player. No harassment, hate speech, slurs or threats — including in voice and in DMs with people you met here.
  2. No cheating, exploits for sale, account selling, boosting services or links to them.
  3. Keep LFG posts complete: game, mode, platform, region, time and open slots. Close your post when the group is full.
  4. Losing is part of games. No rage-flaming teammates, and take disputes to a moderator privately.
  5. Clips and screenshots must be your own or credited. Tag spoilers and anything with flashing effects.
  6. No self-promotion outside channels that allow it. Ask a moderator before posting streams or tournaments.
  7. Follow Discord's Community Guidelines and each game's own terms of service.

Need stricter or more relaxed wording? Customise these rules in the rules generator.

Welcome message

Welcome to The Gaming Hub! Pick your games and platforms in Channels & Roles so the right channels unlock. Looking for a squad? Post in #lfg with your game, platform, region and time. Game nights are listed in Events — mark yourself Interested to be notified when one starts. Questions? Ask any Moderator.

Want a shorter, professional or bot-ready version? Try the welcome message generator.

The Gaming Hub FAQ

Should each game have its own category or just a channel?

Start with one channel per game inside GAMES. Promote a game to its own category only when it needs several channels, such as LFG, clips and strategy, and has enough active players to fill them.

Why is LFG a forum channel instead of a text channel?

In a busy text channel, requests scroll away within minutes. A forum gives each session its own post with tags for platform and region, so players can filter, reply and close the post when the group is full.

Do I need Community features enabled?

Yes, for this template. Forum channels (#lfg and #clips-and-highlights), Announcement channels, the Stage channel and Server Onboarding all require Community. Without Community, use text channels with threads instead of forums, a read-only text channel for announcements, and assign game roles manually or with a role bot.

How do I stop people using @everyone for game nights?

Remove the mention permission from @everyone and Member, give it only to Event Host, and use the opt-in Game Night Ping role for event reminders.
