(Host checklist) Has the new member read the spoiler policy?
- Yes→ Reader
A reading group with a current read, spoiler-safe discussion by section, nominations and voting, scheduled meetings and a shelf of past books.
Run a book club where people read at different speeds. Each book has discussion posts by section so nobody is spoiled, nominations and votes pick the next book fairly, meetings are scheduled events, and past books stay on a searchable shelf.
Create each category with its permissions first, then add channels inside it and keep them synced to the category. Channel types used: Text, Announcement, Forum, Voice.
What we're reading and when.
How the club works, the rules, and the spoiler policy.
New book picks, schedule changes and meeting reminders.
One pinned post for the current book: title, edition notes (ebook, audiobook, large print), content warnings, and the reading schedule by section.
Spoiler-safe discussion by section.
One post per section of the current book, titled "Book title — Chapters 1–6". Discussion stays within that section; open the next post only when you've read it.
Permissions: Only Club Host and Discussion Lead create posts; everyone replies.
Forum tags: Current read, Past read, Finished — full spoilers, Discussion questions
Spoiler-free chat about books, reading habits and anything else.
Books outside the club pick. Use spoiler tags for plot details.
Nominations and a fair vote.
One post per nominated book: title, author, length, why you'd like to read it, and content warnings. Nominations open in the last week of each book.
Permissions: Make On the ballot, Chosen and Next time moderator-only.
Forum tags: Nominated, On the ballot, Chosen, Next time
The Club Host posts a Discord poll with up to 10 books from the nominations. Polls can run for up to a week.
Permissions: Members can vote in the poll but not send messages.
Live discussion.
Discussion questions before each meeting and a short summary after, for members who couldn't attend.
Permissions: Club Host and Discussion Lead post.
Monthly meeting voice channel; each meeting is a Scheduled Event.
Permissions: Allow Video if members want cameras on.
Everything the club has read.
One message per finished book with the dates read and a link to its discussion posts. Members rate it with reactions.
Planning.
Schedules, discussion questions and who leads the next meeting.
Create roles in this order, from the top of the role list down. A role can only manage roles below it, and bot roles must sit above any role they assign.
Different staff setup or bots? Adapt this hierarchy in the roles generator.
Runs the club: picks the ballot, sets the schedule, hosts meetings and moderates.
Leads the discussion for one book; the role rotates between members.
Every member of the club.
Notified before meetings and when new section posts open.
Community features are used for the forum and announcement channels, but onboarding stays simple: new members read #welcome-and-rules and #current-read, and the Club Host assigns Reader. Community Onboarding is optional for a club this size.
Try Discord's built-in features first. Bot names are examples to evaluate, not endorsements; CordNexa has no affiliation with any bot. Review the permissions a bot requests before adding it.
Nudges before each section deadline.
Native first: Scheduled Events for meetings, plus announcements for new section posts, cover most clubs.
These steps are specific to this kit. For the reasoning behind each stage — permissions, onboarding, testing and launch — see how to make a Discord server.
Enable Community for the forum and announcement channels (it requires a verified-email verification level, the explicit media filter set to scan all members, a rules channel and a community updates channel).
Club Host → Discussion Lead → Reader → Meeting Ping.
In #welcome-and-rules, explain the reading pace, the section-post spoiler rule, how nominations and voting work, and how often you meet.
Post the book, formats, content warnings and section schedule in #current-read, then create the first section post in #book-discussion.
Create #nominations with its tags. Make #vote read-only so the channel shows only the poll.
Create a Scheduled Event for Book Chat, and post discussion questions in #meeting-notes a few days before.
Use View Server As Role → Reader to confirm HOSTS is hidden and #vote shows the poll.
Put the venue in each Scheduled Event and keep Book Chat for members who join remotely.
Run a second track (for example Non-fiction) with its own tag in #book-discussion and its own schedule.
Use weekly section posts and a pinned chapter tracker; hold a meeting at the halfway point.
Keep all content suitable for the youngest members and have staff host every meeting.
Need stricter or more relaxed wording? Customise these rules in the rules generator.
Welcome to the club! Our current book and reading schedule are in #current-read. Discuss each section in its own post in #book-discussion — only open posts for sections you've read. Nominate what we read next in #nominations, and join us in Book Chat for the next meeting (it's in Events).
Want a shorter, professional or bot-ready version? Try the welcome message generator.
Give each section of the book its own forum post and ask members to discuss only within the section they've reached. Forum channels need Community features; without them, use one thread per section in a text channel.
Open nominations near the end of each book, then post a Discord poll with up to 10 nominated titles. Polls can run for up to a week.
Both use a shared pick, but Book Club is built around reading schedules, section-based discussion, live meetings with prepared questions, rotating discussion leads and a shelf of past reads.
