@everyone

@everyone only sees the entrance until they receive Member.

Grant: View Channels (welcome and rules channels only), Read Message History, Add Reactions (rules channel only)

Deny: View Channels everywhere else, Send Messages, Mention @everyone, @here, and All Roles, Create Invite

Notes for this setup
  • Use Discord's Timeout instead of a "Muted" role — it works in every channel without extra overrides.
  • If you use Community Onboarding, Discord requires at least 7 default channels, with at least 5 where @everyone can view and send messages. In that case keep @everyone able to chat in your main public channels and use the Member role to unlock extra areas.
  • Ping roles are not mentionable, so members cannot spam them. Staff roles with "Mention @everyone, @here, and All Roles" can still ping them.
  • Without a role bot, use Server Onboarding (requires Community features) so members can pick self-assign roles.

ABOUT THIS TOOL

What the roles generator does

The generator plans a complete role hierarchy for your server from its type, size, moderation needs, staff structure and bots. It covers common Discord roles such as owner, admin, moderator, helper, member, bot, self-assignable, notification and cosmetic roles. Each gets a purpose, position, assignment method and safe permission guidance.

It is built around how Discord permissions actually work. A role can only manage roles below it, so bots that hand out roles are placed above those roles, and moderation roles sit above Member. When you reorder roles, the generator warns you if something would stop working.

No role in the plan receives Administrator. It overrides every permission and channel restriction, so it is the most dangerous setting to hand out. The owner already has full control.

HOW TO USE IT

From settings to a published post

  1. Describe your server

Choose the community type, size and moderation needs. Heavy moderation keeps image and link posting for trusted members, which slows down spam accounts.

  2. Set your staff structure

Solo owners get a lean setup. Teams get Moderator, and full teams get Admin, Trial Moderator and a community-specific role such as Event Host.

  3. Add bots and integrations

Turn on the bots you use so their roles are placed correctly. Supporter integrations add a role that the platform manages for you.

  4. Choose optional roles

Add interest, ping, colour, level and pronoun roles. Ping roles are opt-in, so staff never need @everyone.

  5. Customise and copy

Rename roles, change colours, reorder or remove them, then copy the plan and create the roles in Server Settings → Roles, top to bottom.

PRACTICAL GUIDANCE

Getting it right

Create roles top-down

Create roles in the listed order and drag them to match. Order matters more than names: it decides who can manage whom. Use the Discord Role Ideas guide when you need server-specific names and examples before generating the final stack.

Permissions on roles, access on channels

Give server-wide permissions through roles, then use channel overrides for visibility. Interest roles need no permissions — they unlock channels through overrides.

Keep cosmetic roles permission-free

Colour, level and pronoun roles should never grant permissions. That keeps self-assigned roles harmless.

Check what a role can see

Use Server Settings → Roles → View Server As Role to see exactly what a role can see, before anyone joins.

AVOID THESE

Common mistakes

  • Giving moderators Administrator

Administrator bypasses every restriction, and a single compromised moderator account can wipe the server. Grant specific permissions instead.

  • Accepting every permission a bot asks for

Read the permissions a bot requests before adding it. If a bot insists on Administrator, treat that as a warning sign and look for one that asks only for what its features need.

  • Bot roles below the roles they assign

A role bot can't give out roles above its own. If self-assign roles fail silently, check the order first.

  • A "Muted" role

Discord's built-in Timeout already does this reliably across every channel, with no overrides to maintain.

GOOD TO KNOW

Roles generator questions

What roles should a Discord server have?

Most servers need an owner display role, a moderator role, a member role, and roles for any bots. Add interest, notification and cosmetic roles when members need to choose topics, pings or colours.

How does Discord's role hierarchy work?

Roles higher in the list outrank lower ones. Members with Manage Roles can only edit and assign roles below their own highest role, and can only give permissions they have themselves. Members can't kick, ban or change the nicknames of people whose highest role is equal to or above theirs, and bots follow the same rule.

Which Discord permissions are dangerous?

Administrator, Manage Server, Manage Roles, Manage Channels, Manage Webhooks, Ban Members, Kick Members, and Mention @everyone, @here, and All Roles. Grant them only to trusted staff, and consider Discord's 2FA requirement for moderation so those accounts must use two-factor authentication.

Should roles be mentionable?

Usually not. Staff roles can be mentionable so members can call for help. Ping roles work best as non-mentionable, with staff holding the permission to mention them, so members can't spam them.

What does "display separately" do?

It groups members with that role in the member list. Use it for staff and a few special roles. Too many separate groups make the list harder to read.

Does the tool create the roles for me?

No. It produces a plan you create in Discord yourself. CordNexa doesn't connect to your Discord account.
